SERUM NEUROFILAMENT LIGHT AS A BIOMARKER FOR MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY IN CONTACT SPORTS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the article by Shahim et al, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss neurofilament light (NFL) testing results in patients (boxers and hockey players) with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) observed in this study
  • Describe the association between severity of head injury and serum NFL levels observed among boxers in this study
  • Explain the ability of serum NFL concentrations to identify patients at risk for prolonged postconcussive symptoms following head injury
